Civil Engineering Faculty Member Wins Prestigious Golden Eagle Award

Release Date: 10/2/2008

Jack
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.- Jack Buffington, who serves as a research professor in the civil engineering department and as the associate director of the Mack-Blackwell Rural Transportation Center at the University of Arkansas, will be honored by the Society of American Military Engineers with the prestigious Golden Eagle Award at a ceremony in Arlington, Va. on March 27, 2009. Since 1996, the society has honored two outstanding Americans each year for contributions to the engineering profession and national security.

Buffington, who has been with the College of Engineering since 1996, plays an integral role in both the civil engineering department and the Mack-Blackwell Rural Transportation Center. His work with the university involves teaching, research and service. His impeccable reputation in teaching and his development of a high quality job search program for civil engineering students led to his recognition with the Outstanding Service to Students Award in 1999, 2002 and 2004.

“Jack is the definition of humility and class. For many of us, working with Jack will truly be a once-in-a-lifetime experience; we will not be so lucky to work with such a talented individual again,” said Kevin Hall, department head of the civil engineering department.

Buffington retired from the Navy Civil Engineer Corps with the rank of Rear Admiral. His career with the Navy spanned 34 years. During his military career, he served as the Chief of Engineers for the Navy, Commander of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command and Chief of the Civil Engineer Corps in charge of Navy contracting and public works worldwide, with an annual workload of over $7 billion and more than 22,000 employees.

The society is the premier professional engineering association in the United States for connecting architects, engineers and builders in the public sector and private industry, uniting them to improve individual and collective capabilities for national security. The award was sculpted as a crystal eagle in flight above a solid wooden base, symbolizing the strength and character of the individuals being honored.
