The Department of Civil Engineering offers undergraduate and graduate programs leading to the following degrees:

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE)
  • Master of Science in Civil Engineering (MSCE)
  • Master of Science in Environmental Engineering (MSEnE)
  • Master of Science in Transportation Engineering (MSTE)
  • Master of Science in Engineering (MSE)
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

The BSCE, MSEnE, and MSTE degrees are accredited by the Engineering Accrediation Commission (EAC) of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).  In many states, including Arkansas, the Board of Registration for engineers requires each person applying to be a registered professional engineer possess an ABET-accredited engineering degree.  Additional information concerning the Department of Civil Engineering and ABET accreditation may be found by clicking the link for "Accreditation / ABET".

Details concerning the undergraduate program may be found in the Civil Engineering Undergraduate Handbook.  Details concerning any of the graduate programs offered may be found in the Civil Engineering Graduate Handbook.

The objectives of the civil engineering program are to produce graduates who are:

  • employable in the fields of foundation, earthwork, and embankment design and analysis; water, wastewater, and waste handling and treatment; highway facility design and operation; and structural design and analysis.
  • academically prepared to pursue licensure as a Professional Engineer.
  • prepared to pursue an advanced education.

To fulfill these objectives, all students must take courses in geotechnical, environmental, transportation, and structural engineering. Courses are designed to present “real world” applications without sacrificing conceptual and theoretical basics. Students complete design problems in each of these areas; and, as part of the senior year, they participate in two major design projects.

Honors Program Requirements

Students enrolled in the Honors College who are to receive the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering must complete a minimum of 12 hours of honors credit. At least 6 hours must be completed within the Civil Engineering program including at least 3 hours resulting in an Honors Thesis. The CVEG honors courses are acceptable as engineering electives and in some cases may be substituted for required courses.
